Project 3: Wall Art

Project 3

Course Code and Name: MSJ 11213 Principles of Public Relations

Project Name: Wall Art

Topic: “আকাক্ষা”

Project Date: Summer 2019

Project Description: According to the Social Norms Theory, social norms are the most consequential idea in sociology. Right and wrong are codified by these norms, which define what kinds of conduct are deemed moral and ethical. People have strong opinions about social mores, and those who break them sometimes face social stigma or rejection. There is still a stigma attached to having a female kid, even in modern times.

Project Justification: Our poster's message is that a female kid's birth is a sign of hopelessness in this nation, whereas the birth of a boy child provides joy to the family. This led us to decide on the name "Akhankha" for our endeavour. This Bangla word means "want" or "need" in English. For this reason, we feel it is crucial to demonstrate the widespread cultural expectation that a male kid will be born into this country.

Q1. Why did You Personally Choose This Subject Matter for Your Poster, and How is it Related to Our Curriculum Integration Theme?

This semester's theme of Curriculum integration (CI) is ‘The Social Norms theory’. This theory aims to understand the environment and interpersonal influences to change behaviour, which can be more effective than focusing on the individual to change behaviour. The Social Norms Theory posits that our behaviour is influenced by misperceptions of how our peers think and act. For example, if a boy has long hair, people think he is a bad boy. Our topic is “আকাক্ষা”. We did a canvas painting for our project. We wanted to show through this painting that our society still considers the birth of male children happy, but the birth of a female child is seen as a form of despair. As a result of this, it has been seen that there has been a fallacy that a girl child has been killed. We raise our voices against female infanticide through our painting poster. We want people to be aware through this poster that whether it is a girl child or a boy, both have the right to come into the world.

Q2. What was Your Specific Role in the R.A.C.E. Process?

We followed the R.A.C.E model. I did the research and Painting part with another team member who came up with the idea. Based on the concept, I researched and provided the proper materials. As our target audience, we always remember that there will be many outsiders. So, we did our whole work keeping that in our mind.

In my research part, I tried to provide materials and links regarding this. Apart from this, I also Paint This Canvas Art.

Q3. What Theories (if you used any) or Models Apart From R.A.C.E (if any) Did You Use in Fulfilling Your Role During this Awareness Poster Campaign, and Why did You use Them? If You Used the R.A.C.E. Process, How did you Plan it out?

We used the R.A.C.E process while doing our Wall art. We thought it would be the best process to carry out our PR project successfully. The R.A.C.E process stands for-

R – Research

A – Action

C – Communication

E – Evaluation

Our Wall Art exhibit in the visual Exhibition part of Curriculum Integration at Shilpakala Academy. We interviewed and took the visitors' feedback for evaluation, which is the last part of the R.A.C.E process.

Learnings and outcomes (Self-reflection):

·         Coming up with new ideas

·         Learned to use a poster to bring attention to a problem.

Learning and Outcome (Self-Reflection)

Until now, I had never worked on anything in the field of public relations before. I picked up some PR 101 knowledge, including fundamental concepts and techniques. The RACE concept and its guidelines for a successful campaign were introduced to me, and I acquired a background in the principles of liberty, justice, and the rule of law. I learned that I had some abilities, such as leadership and organization.
